Explanation
DEATH AND
CUTTING FINGER
What do you do to show
your sadness when one of your family died? Are you sad, crying, or maybe hysterical?
It’s different
with mountain communities in Papua especially for Dani ethnic in Wamena. They have a unique
tradition that we never find
it. Do you know what the tradition is? Right, the tradition is cutting finger.
If one of their family died, they cut
their knuckles. Why they do it?
They believe that the finger is
a symbol of togetherness in their life. The fingers work together to build a
force, so our hands can be used perfectly. If we lose one of the knuckles,
our work doesn’t run maximally. Togetherness in family is like fingers working together.
Dani ethnic cut
their knuckles in various ways,
such as:
1. using a sharp object directly,
the tool is
usually used are ax, knife or machete
2. biting the knuckles,
they bite
their knuckles until it broke up
3. tying up with a rope,
they tie their
knuckles with the rope until it’s blood flow stop and then cut it off.
If the injury has
recovered and doesn’t hurt anymore, so the sadness
and hurts of people who abandoned
his family dead will end.
According to belief, cutting finger is one of way to prevent the
same incident
in the family who are grieving.
